Two Brains, One Body: Understanding the Gut-Brain Connection
We often think of the gut as being responsible for digestion only. But its role goes far beyond breaking down the food we eat.
Your gut is home to a complex network of neurons, trillions of microorganisms and a large part of your immune system. It is in constant communication with your brain, influencing everything from digestion and immune function to mood, energy and cognitive function.
This intricate communication system is known as the gut–brain axis. In my recent talk, Two Brains, One Body: Unlocking the Gut–Brain Connection, I explored why supporting gut health can be such an important part of understanding the bigger picture of our wellbeing.
🧠The Second Brain
Your gut contains an extraordinary network of neurons known as the enteric nervous system (ENS), sometimes referred to as the body's ‘second brain’. This network contains an estimated 100–600 million neurons and has the ability to coordinate many aspects of digestion independently.
But the gut and brain don't work in isolation. They are connected through the vagus nerve, which forms an important communication pathway between the two. The vagus nerve is involved in regulating functions including heart rate, breathing, and digestion, while also carrying signals between the gut and brain.
This is a two-way conversation, and when the gut is under strain, the brain can be affected too.
🤒Signs and Symptoms of a Dysregulated Gut–Brain Axis
When the gut–brain axis is out of balance, the effects may extend well beyond digestive symptoms.
Some of the signs and symptoms explored in the talk included:
Brain fog
Poor concentration
Forgetfulness
Persistent fatigue
Anxiety and depression
Food intolerances
Joint pain
Skin inflammation and flare-ups
Neurological conditions such as Parkinson's, Alzheimer's and epilepsy
These symptoms can have many possible causes, so they shouldn't automatically be attributed to gut health. However, they can be useful clues when considered as part of the wider picture.
The important question isn't simply “What symptoms do I have?” but “What might be contributing to it?”
🦠Gut Dysbiosis: When the Microbiome Loses Its Balance
A healthy gut microbiome isn't about having as many bacteria as possible. It's about diversity, balance and harmony.
Gut dysbiosis describes an imbalance within the gut microbiome. In the presentation, I highlight three key patterns:
Loss of beneficial bacteria
Reduced microbiome diversity
Bacterial overgrowth in the wrong place, such as small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO)
These changes can affect the environment within the gut, including the gut lining.
One important part of this relationship involves short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). These are compounds produced by certain gut bacteria and play a role in supporting and nourishing the gut lining. When the microbiome is not functioning optimally, and SCFA production drops this can create gut permeability also known as Leaky Gut. Large molecules and toxins are now able to leak into the bloodstream directly.
🔥 From the Gut to the Brain: The Inflammatory Connection
So, how can changes in the gut potentially influence what happens elsewhere in the body?
One important pathway is the immune system. When we have leaky gut, the immune system may respond by increasing inflammatory signalling creating an environment of chronic low-grade inflammation that circulates around the entire body and up to the brain. The brain is protected by a specialised barrier called the blood–brain barrier. Systemic inflammation can break this barrier leading to a leaky blood-brain barrier and therefore contributing to neuro-inflammation.
At the same time, signals from an inflamed or stressed gut can travel through the vagus nerve, creating another route of communication between the gut and brain.
This is why gut health shouldn't be viewed purely through the lens of digestion. The conversation can extend to immune function, inflammation and neurological wellbeing.
🔍 How Do You Identify What's Going On?
This is where gut microbiome testing can be useful.
Rather than relying solely on guesswork or following the latest gut-health trend, testing can provide a clearer picture of what's happening within an individual's microbiome.
The presentation includes gut microbiome testing as a way of investigating the underlying picture, alongside markers of leaky gut such as Zonulin.
Working with a qualified nutritional therapist can also help put test results into context and turn a collection of numbers and bacteria into something meaningful.
Most importantly, there is no one-size-fits-all approach to gut health. Two people can experience similar symptoms for very different reasons. Testing can therefore be a useful starting point for moving away from assumptions and towards a more individualised approach.
🛡️Five Simple but Powerful Steps to Support Your Gut
The good news is that our gut health isn't fixed. There are practical things we can do to support it. And often, the simplest changes can be the most powerful.
1. Eat a wide variety of foods:
A diverse diet helps support a diverse microbiome. Rather than focusing on one ‘perfect’ food, aim for variety across your diet.
2. Choose foods that lower inflammation
Build your meals around nutrient-dense, minimally processed foods and plenty of plant variety.
3. Manage your stress
The gut and brain are constantly communicating, so stress isn't simply something that happens ‘in your head’. Finding ways to regulate and manage stress can be an important part of supporting the gut–brain axis. I use EFT to support my clients in managing stress and anxiety.
4. Prioritise movement and sleep
Regular movement and good-quality sleep are foundational for overall wellbeing, and are important parts of creating the conditions in which your body can function well.
5. Use antibiotics wisely
Antibiotics can be incredibly important when they are needed, but they can also affect the gut microbiome negatively. Using them appropriately and wisely is another consideration when supporting long-term gut health.

Gut Health Is About So Much More Than Digestion!
When we talk about gut health, it's easy to focus on bloating, constipation, diarrhoea or other digestive symptoms. But the gut is part of a much bigger system.
Supporting gut health means supporting an ecosystem that plays a role in immune function, inflammation, mental wellbeing and communication between the gut and the brain. Understanding that connection can change the way we look at symptoms. Instead of treating each symptom as a completely separate problem, we can start asking whether there are underlying factors connecting the dots.
Your gut isn't simply a digestive system…It's part of the conversation your whole body is having.
