Neuroscience is the scientific study of the nervous system, focusing on how the brain, spinal cord, and nerves work together to support thought, emotion, movement, and behaviour.
In epilepsy, there needs to be a fine balance as we do not want to over excite and over challenge the brain. But neuroscience shows that stimulating the brain of those with seizures can enhance memory and attention in those with epilepsy and help the brain become more resilient after abnormal electrical activity.
There has been vast research on the ketogenic diet and its impact of lowering seizures. The keto diet is mainly based around a high healthy fat diet and moderate protein cutting out cheap carbs. This just highlights how important diet is on the brain.
Stress and anxiety are one of the main triggers for many forms of epilepsy. Exercise is one of the most powerful ways for humans to reduce anxiety and lower stress levels. Increased blood flow to an epileptic brain will also help someone after a seizure regain their function, memory, and attention quicker.
It goes without saying that living with epilepsy can be extremely stressful. Not just after having the seizure, but the anxiety that comes with not knowing when the next seizure will happen. But it’s a vicious circle and the stress of having a seizure causes more seizures. Deep breathing, speaking to a therapist, and finding the best ways to destress will help keep the seizures at bay.
As well as all of the above, social interaction is particularly important for those with epilepsy, who face a lot of stigma and isolation. It’s very hard to do any of the previous 4 tips from above if you do not have close relationships, social groups you can talk to, and a sense of being connected to people and life. Although this is tip number 5, for me, it’s the starting point for anyone want to take control of their epilepsy.
Although these 5 points are pretty straight forward on paper, to actually have the motivation and discipline to change your, not so useful, daily habits to adopt these beneficial ones, is harder in real life. My epilepsy reset programme mirrors a lot of these points but on the 12 week programme, you have tailored help and support from me to get you started. In the course we identify the best lifestyle and diet choices for you specifically, and we use EFT as a form of therapy to bring those stress levels right down. Like me, if you tried to do this alone and kept having to start again, this is the answer. Don’t do it alone, we need support, human encouragement to help these points become part of our normally daily life and watch your brain become more controlled, resilient, and a powerhouse!
